THE AUTHORITATIVE REFERENCE ON LINCOLN CENTS

First Edition, 1996, KCK press Rancocas, N.J.
384 pages

by John A. Wexler and Kevin Flynn

coppercoins.com rating :

Written by the authorities on die varieties, this book is packed full of good information for the Lincoln cent specialist. It covers grading, design changes, doubled die varieties, repunched mint marks, over mint marks, hot items, counterfeit detection, history, and more, with interviews of mint officials including Frank Gasparro, the designer of the memorial cent reverse. While this book encompasses a vast majority of Lincoln cent varieties, it is a bit weak in two areas. First, the numbering system for varieties is outdated (John Wexler has since abandoned the system used in this book in favor of a new system), and the coverage of repunched mint marks (RPMs) is weak.

THE RPM BOOK
A Comprehensive Listing & Price Guide to
Repunched Mint Marks & Over Mint Marks

First Printing, May 1983, Lonesome John Publishing Company
Newbury Park, CA., 91320

293 pages, cover price $14.95

by John A. Wexler and Tom Miller

coppercoins.com rating :

While this guide provides a lot of good information and hundreds of photos for the RPM (Repunched Mint Mark) collector, it is far out-dated. Many attributed varieties in this book have since either been renumbered or rescinded. This work was a pioneering effort and was ahead of its time when printed, but newer books with better information are available.

THE LINCOLN CENT DOUBLED DIE

1984, John A. Wexler
226 pages, cover price $18.95

coppercoins.com rating :

A staple reference for the Lincoln cent die variety specialist, this book provides invaluable reference on how doubled dies are made, the different classes of doubled die, and hundreds of specific listings with photos and a price guide using the original system for classification of doubled dies developed by John Wexler. This book also provides photos and information regarding non-collectible forms of machine damage doubling. Some of the attribution information provided, however, is out-dated, and a lot of varieties have been discovered since this book was printed.

170 pages, spiral bound, cover price $21.95

Written by Brian Allen and John A. Wexler

coppercoins.com rating :

This book is an absolute must for researching the Lincoln cent RPM. It contains price information for all known Lincoln cent RPM varieties, and is cross referenced with attribution information from CONECA. It also has population reports for some of the most desired varieties in the Lincoln cent. This book is up-to-date in the field, and is fun to use, with the "Top 100" list of the most popular RPMs. The Front of the book also devotes a page to each of the 10 most wanted Lincoln cent mint mark varieties. Another section is devoted to the different mint mark styles and the years in which they were used.

THE COMPLETE LINCOLN CENT ENCYCLOPEDIA

1988, Krause Publications, Iola, WI

144 pages, cover price $14.95

by Shane M. Anderson

coppercoins.com rating :

This book is all but befitting its title, as it is very far from complete. It is lacking a lot of information and has painfully few photos. Attribution information is non-existent, and the rarity scales used are confusing at best. While this may be a decent guide for a coin generalist as a quick reference for mintages and basic information, I would be prone to desuade the true Lincoln cent specialist from spending money on this one, as disappointment would certainly be the case.

THE RPM BOOK, SECOND EDITION: LINCOLN CENTS

1997, Stanton Printing and Publishing, Savannah, GA.
284 pages, spiral bound.
by James Wiles, Ph.D.

coppercoins.com rating :

This book is a must have for the RPM collector. It includes complete attribution information for most Lincoln cent RPMs including a photo and die marker information for separate stages of each of the nearly 1,100 RPMs listed. This work is a continuation of The RPM Book listed above, but is still incomplete for ALL known varieties. It is, however, an excellent resource!
