Great site here: http://www.eacs.org/
I've already coincidentally quoted one of their webpages elsewhere in this forum.

Here's a copy of a post I created for the NumisAddict site. It has lots of info about Early American Coppers.

... I wanted to post some things that would be of interest and value to the NumisAddicts. It was suggested that Early American Coppers might be a good starting point. It's a broad field and surprised me with the wealth of offerings and collection opportunities.
I decided to start this thread by presenting a definition of Early American Coppers and some links that I thought you would find both interesting and educational. I really did not know where to draw the line to separate Early American Coppers from "Modern" American Coppers or whatever came next. So, I went to an expert source of information -- Early American Coppers Society.
I suggest that we use this thread to get this process moving and then perhaps we will need to roll-off additional threads dedicated to specific areas within the Early American Coppers. Here's the definition that I got from the EAC website.
"...early U.S. copper coins - Colonials, Half Cents, Large Cents, and Hard Time Tokens." So it appears that the line is drawn with the introduction of the small cent in 1857. 1857 being the last year of the Large Cent as well.
Here are some neat links:
Early American Copper Society – really investigate this site. They have lots of information. http://www.eacs.org/
An Appreciation of the Early American Coppers Club – an article by Q. David Bowers. As most Bower’s articles are, it is well written, easy to read, and packed with good information. http://www.davidhall.com/articles/article_view.chtml?artid=2914&universeid=533&type=1
Copper Coins and Comments – another article by Q. David Bowers.
As in the above article, Bowers calls upon Penny-Wise, the journal of the EAC Society. http://www.davidhall.com/articles/article_view.chtml?artid=2789&universeid=533&type=1
The ANA has an interesting YN Early American Coppers program. It doesn’t apply to most of us directly but might fit some of our own YNs. http://www.money.org/yn/yneacproject.html
The ANA also has a great site dedicated to the Vermont Coppers. I didn’t even remember that Vermont was an Independent Nation before it became a State. http://www.money.org/vermont/vtexhibit.html
More info in the next post --- running out of room. |

Here's the second part of my Early American Coppers post from NumisAddict.

...Here are some more links for Early American Coppers.
The University of Notre Dame has a great website about “The Coins of Colonial and Early America”. It’s a very big site and takes a long time to work your way through. It’s well worth the time, if you have even a passing interest in Early American Coins. http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/index.html
This site is a part of the Notre Dame site but deals strictly with the “Constellatio Nova Coppers 1783, 1785, 1786”. I had heard of these and looked at them in the Red Book at one time. I never really paid much attention though. They are beautiful and probably very challenging to collect. (Deep pockets are definitely needed.) http://www.coins.nd.edu/ColCoin/ColCoinIntros/Cons-Nova.intro.html
Eagle Eye Rare Coins is pretty well know for their outstanding Indian Head Cents. The are also really big into Hard Times Tokens and especially NGC certified and slabbed tokens. They have some reasonably priced tokens and some way out there tokens. I like the site just to look at the pictures and get a feeling for some of the designs. The high quality tokens and photos make it easier on the eyes than many of the ebay offerings. http://www.indiancent.com/market/patcwt.htm
This is the link for the Colonial Coins Collectors Club referred to as C4. They have some information on their website. I think they also have a newsletter, as do most of the specialty clubs like EACS. I don’t know much about the club and I don’t to my knowledge know anyone who is a member. http://www.colonialcoins.org/index.html
This site has a timeline of Colonial Coins. I don’t know how accurate it is but it’s a good starting place for the uninitiated among us. http://www.worksandwords.com/moneym/coltable.htm
This is part of a site called US Coins. The articles are quite interesting. The four articles referenced on this page were all quite interesting and well done. Enjoy them. I especially liked the photography article. http://www.uscents.com/articles/index.html
After you checkout the above articles go to the bottom of the page. The links are really good. There’s a nice grading guide, a checklist of copper coins(very detailed), and a nice photo library.
US Cents Grading http://www.uscents.com/coppergrade/index.html
Early Coppers Checklists http://www.uscents.com/copperlist/index.html
Early Coppers Photo Library http://www.uscents.com/library/index.html
There are a number of good articles in the Numismatist and I’m sure other magazines and journals. I’ll continue to look for resources and add them to this thread as they come up. I hope that you all enjoy this journey into Early American Coppers. Please post additional information, insights, resources, and especially pictures of your coins. |

There are a few discussion groups on Yahoo that deal with Early Coppers and Colonials. These groups are designed to exchange information and provide a forum for buying, selling, and trading coins.
This is C4 online. It’s the discussion group for members of the Colonial Coin Collectors Club. I believe that you have to be a member of C4 to use this Yahoo group.
Yahoo Colonial Coin Collectors Club Forum
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/C4online/
This is the Colonial Coins forum. It is dedicated to the research, discussion and enjoyment of Early American coinage, medals, tokens, and paper money. Membership is open to the public.

Thanks Art, some great links there. I have set up an Angelfire site to link some of my photos. So when I get home I will link some photos I took of my 1786 New Jersey Copper, Narrow Shield, in this section. Like I said in a previous post, the QX3 microscope I am using does not have a field large enough to photograph an entire coin at the minimum magnification, 10x. So I have 10x photos of portions of the coin.
