I believe the literal translation is "not money".

Coin World has an article on the German emergency money after World War I.

There are many types of notgeld. The article says there were 600 locations which struck notgeld, for a total of 3600 possible coins in a "municipal" themed type/denomination collection. The article also states there are probably an equal number of privately issued notgeld too.

They list to websites, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of notgeld there.

Robert:

During 2002, in one of my coin shop's bid boards, the owner had a box full of notgeld in mint condition for $5. I have it now. There are about 25 pieces. They are very colorful and have a somewhat crude design. All are different. They are all dated in the 1920's. If you search ebay on Paper Money - World, there are many $1 - $5 and some go as high as $15.

Literally, "not" in German means "emergency".

A doctor is an "arzt". Doctors that respond to traffic wrecks on-scene (yes, they do have them) drive in orange cars with big white letters, "notarzt," meaning "emergency physician."

For education and clarification sake, the word is pronounced very closely to the English word, "note"

a Notarzt car:

Another use for "not" in German that is very common, and essential for the traveller would be the word "notausgang" posted with this sign:

Meaning: emergency exit
