I simply cannot believe the prices some Lincolns have been going for of late - high grade certified common-date cents selling in the thousands!! Example, last week on eBay a 1953D cent in PCGS MS67RD sold for over $4000!! Prices like this were reserved mainly for original color BU coins from the teens and 20s no more than two years ago. Where this market is going is anybody's guess, but mine is that the trend will continue.

Collectors are seeking "something different" among the more affordable coins. Part of this too is the growing realization that collectors who buy the key dates in very high grade also desire the more common coins in similar grades. These are sometimes just as elusive in top grades. There are other trends too which are reinforcing this one: Old timers are working to update their sets to include the memorials and the zinc coins. This added attention and effort has revitalized interest in the entire series. The coming centennial of the Lincoln cent has people anticipating increased demand and perhaps even the discontinuance of the coin which would lead to even greater attention as more jumped aboard. The heightened awareness of varieties has made many realize that there are rare coins right under their noses and in circulation. All through the hobby there has been a growing trend toward seeking the finest examples. This is largely the result of having the best coins identified by third party graders and the existence of the internet to actually find such coins.

There are also large numbers of new and eturning collectors. The baby boomers who lost interest in their teens are returning with a vengence and they want the coins they collected as kids but couldn't afford.

How long any of thes trends will last is anyones guess, but likely there won't be any let up in the net direction for a few years yet.
