Atleast for the top coin, they could have used a planchet with a smaller diameter, dont you think?

The top one is Cabo Verde (Cape Verde) which was a Port. colony (group of islands) off the w. coast of Africa.

I remember reading somewhere that the Portuguese discovered CV and the Azores while learning about what we call the trade winds... they would sail south, then the trade winds would carry them west to CV, then they would go north and the gulf stream would carry them back northeast to Portugal. It's how Columbus thought he would get back from his 1492 voyage to "China". Pretty gutsy move for 1492.

I kinda like it that way, at least on this one. The rim is brown and center glows red. It makes a nice frame for it.
