Found this 1940D with a fairly strong mechanical shifting of the date and MM but below the MM it appears to be a nice secondary MM showing a horizontal bar to the south. I haven't really posted much in a while and thought I would throw this one out there. Wink

Steven,
I think you may have something there. It is pretty easy to see the mechanical doubling on the date and mintmark, but I do not believe the bar below the mintmark is part of that. I believe that very well may be an RPM.

Steven, and Bob, I agree. The slight horizontal segment is NOT MD. Nice find!

I vote for machine doubling... the doubling looks flat and shelf like to me on both the date and mintmark.

Looks like die fatigue to me. At first I thought it was a RPM because of the mark in the upper inside of the mintmark. But now it looks like a die crack. There is also a mark west of the upright that looks like a gouge. Maybe another shot from a different angle might help. But Danister made a good point about the look of the machine doubling, but wear like that on the die is similar to to the 1955 so called doubled die? Just what I see. The number right edge looks very worn from what I can see.

I don't think Danester completely understood the meaning of the thread. We know and agree that the coin has mechanical doubling on it. We stated that a few times. Our area of concern is the horizontal line below the mintmark (where the arrow points to). Coop...I tend to disagree with your assessment. It certainly doesn't look like die fatigue...especially as known in the 1940's. The mark to the right of the mintmark is definitely a post mint ding. As far as it being a die crack...it seems unlikely being that the area of concern is in the field, and not directly attached (as far as I can tell) to the device. There is precedent on other 1940 RPMs of bars under the mintmark. Although I can not be absolutely certain until I can examine the coin, my two choices are RPM, or possible scraping of the field that left a high relief area that may have since worn down some.

The markings to the west of the MM is damage, inside the MM looks to be from the mechanical shift of the MM as well as that to the south. I took a couple more photos but loose a little clarity with them zoomed in so far.

The origional photo has a small area inside the upper portion of the loop, and the last photo, both, (to me), that indicate a very possible RPM. Sorry folks, I huess we all will have to wait 'til Bob gets his "pinkies" on it. We all seem to agree on the MD. Keep cool folks, it is gonna get hotter!

I tend to agree with the assement that it is a RPM. The MM has a mark in at the 11:00 position and also around the the South to the East. I'm no expert by no means but it does look good. Good find Steven.

I have finally got a computer hooked up, I'm glad to be back.

Found a second example of this die or I believe it to be the same.
This coin is in better shape.

Perhaps my eyes need to be re-calibrated but I think I'm going to have to agree with Danester. I think everything south of the MM is machine doubling. It looks to me to be shelf-like, and it very closely matches (in terms of degree and direction) what everyone agrees is machine doubling on the date.

And to be honest I'm not sure what's going on inside to third of the MM. There seems to be a horizontal bar there. Something's going on and I'm not sure what that is.
