I have a 1939 with what appears to have a split tail on the last 9 and is somewhat similar to the 1930 DDO I posted earlier this week. Has anyone ever seen this one (it is on CONECA as 3-O-V-CCW-FM K10)? My close up also shows something on the inside loop but I think is just a die scratch. Steve

I am closer to a novice than en expert but I would toss that back in the roll assuming it was just die wear.

This coin, along with several others is going in to Bob tomorrow. I know that there is a DDO with a split tail 9 out there, I just don't know if this is it. As far as a die wear, I tend to believe this is a MDS or earlier coin with just a few die scratches present, very few flow lines and strong details on both sides of the coin.

Hey CC,
I have a similar example that I also thought was a 39 DDO. I believe that this one shows some deterioration doubling, but not sure if it shows remnants of hub doubling. Take a look if this looks the same.

I looked at a mixed roll of 39-P.
Seemed to have about 1/3 of the coins about like the one posted.
About 1/3 had something similar but the doubling on the 9 did not go as far down to the bottom.
About 1/3 had less or nothing showing on the 9.
I didn't look for markers but these coins were mixed rolls, just guessing there was some master doubling on these.

I would not be surprised that this master die doubling. One problem with MDD is the fact CONECA doesn't list this date with MDD even though it does list several other dates from the late 30's with MDD. If it is decided this MDD, maybe it will get added to CONECA as such. If it isn't MDD, this could just be a very common Class 5 double die.

I received Steven's coins, and looked at this 1939 very carefully. In addition, I looked through several rolls of 1939 cents, and found what a few others have found also. This split in the tail is actually Master Die Doubling, and appears on a lot of coins. I have inquired about the CONECA 3-O-V and found out that the split on the tail of the actual variety is quite significant and is a medium spread doubled die. I have never seen one, but I am hoping to get a copy sometime soon to take pics of. If and when I get it, I will post the pics on the site so we all know what to look for concerning this variety. All in all, those pics in this thread are all considered Master Die Doubling. I guess this could be considered the 'Final Word'

Steven, I hope you rest easy.
Bob, here is a shot of one of the coins you will be getting:
I am convinced that it is not the 001, nor is it the 1MM-100. The MM doesn't show the two serifs, and no "garbage "between the MM, and "9". Maybe a new one?
I have been so "out of this world", due to a drug reaction, that your set of coins are not ready, yet! Don't mess with "Sulfa" drugs!!!

Dick, take your time getting the coins in the mail. You need to take care of yourself first.

Dick, sorry to hear about your unpleasant experience with sulfer drugs. My wife is allergic to sulfer drugs also. Take care and get better quickly.

Bob, and Rollmeupabe, thanks for the support. It hasn't been an experience I'd look forward to repeating, quite the contrary! I feel better today, than In at least two weeks! I never had occassion to receive Sulfa drugs. Mine were always Penicillin. You know WWII era. Mostly because I have always been "disgustingly healthy"! One thing about something like that happens, one sure gets HUNGRY!
Bob, I am checking the 1960P posted above, because I can't make it fit anywhere. Not the MM, and not the DO. I'll just send it, and you an play with it.
Dick
