Nice catch Carl. It is probably (well in my case) a coin that we have longed for for years. Probably not too many of them. Probably the only one you would find at a coin show. (I've never found one at our local show anyway.) Always great to see images of one.

Great you figured out the pictures and your pics are good too.
I'd say it looks real and had an old cleaning. Worth about what you paid. (I haven't recently seen one for less)
It's a nice coin for an albumn and as an example of the big DDO.
The important thing is if you like it and it fits your set. |
Exactly what it is for. I only wish there was an easier way to post photos. That photobucket thing is above me. I just went back there and can't find nothing of what I did before.

Carl, I, too am "More or less computer illiterate." Plainly said, I can build, and repair, but know very little about working from the keyboard end. Much of the applications just are too comlpex for me, BUT, getting back to the subject at hand. I go to Photobucket, and My album. It will take you to where you have the photo(s) you want to post. On each photo, there is a very small box at the lower left of the photo. Click this box on each of the ones you want. Then scroll down to the bottom where it says "generate image, etc. Click on this. Then you will scroll to a list of options for posting. I right click the message boards, and click copy. then you can leave it "open", or close, it makes no difference. Then go to the forum, and to reply, then post your text, and then enter, to put the image(s) directly below. I don't know how to post the links, (to save space on the post), so I go this route. I also like to use the 300x300, or 300X240. Either is a standard size. Hope this works for you, "cuz, it works for me"! The photos you did post are very nice. Mine don't come out that way, yet!

Hey Carl,
Congrats on your purchase. The 55 DDO is, to me, one of the key coins in the entire US coin series. I collect many different series of coins and varieties and I believe that this one coin has gotten more people into coin collecting than any other coin. It was the one coin every kid in my neck of the woods, Brooklyn, looked for in every pocketful of change.
The 55 DDO is a coin to cherish.

Great looking coin, and I would say a nice bargain too. It is one coin I still don't have, so I will continue staring at the one biggie I do have (the 1972 DDO #001)!
I am glad you were able to find the info you needed in the books and on the site, and managed to post some pretty good pics also. Congrats all the way around Carl!

WOW John!
That is nice looking and the color is great, that blue reverse is cool!
You can't loose on that coin, the prices for red or RB are rocketing up.

I've always liked that 55 Double Die. I have a few in lots, lots worse condition in my albums but this one really made my day. I've got 10 sets of Lincoln Cents complete except only 4 have the 55 Double Dies. I keep on looking at this one as if it is going to go away or something. This now means my set #1 is all MS. That one was the my last attempt to do that.

John, My congrats for having the luck, knowledge, and naturally, the "where-with-all" to achieve your dreams, and goals! 'Tis a thing of beauty!

Yes I finally figured out how to use that photobucket thing but sure don't like it much. I find I must sign in first to be able to do anything but it seams anyone can go see my albums there. Not sure yet. As to photos, I use a digital camera and shoot a few hundred photos of everything. Then run it through a program called Photoworks. Not Photoshop but a cheap, easier to use similarity. So simple I've given copies to people that know so little about computers they have a hard time turning it on. Within a few minutes they master Photoworks. I put the photos in an album, check out each and delete everything that looks bad. About 99%. What is left is like what you see. With about 5 digital cameras and 25 film cameras I just keep on trying. I still like that coin. Wonder if I'd ruin it taking it to bed?

Hey Carl,
Do you have any 55 DDO's in lower than AU grade? I ask this because most of these monsters didn't circulated much as they are such obvious DDO's, and if you do, could you try to post a pic of it. It would be great to see a pic of one if you have a lower than AU piece.

Carl, maybe I should try that application. I don't get any results out of Photoshop, in spite of all the help everyone has given. Some things just don't "ring the bell"!

I'd like to see a circ grade 55 DDO too.
It seems most were found in AU, now many are cleaned so all I ever see is cleaned AUs and brown AUs and a few RBs and Reds. I've never seen one below an AU50!
Hard to imagine something like that being spent as a cent
