Found this 1987D today and it looks to have a secondary MM north. Looks like a full curve close to the north and a bit of the lower curve to the north inside the primary MM.

Steven, It is very hard to tell from the photo, but from what little can be seen on the "8", it appears that the same "displacement" is visible there, which would indicate MD. Sorry.

I would guess it's an RPM.

What shows on the 8 looks like abrasion doubling. Notice on the 8 the doubling is moving to the rim with metal flow (like abrasion) but the D is shifted in a different direction.

It still could be MD but I think it's an RPM.

I would tend to think it's an RPM. I would however, like to get a clear look at the top of the 87 of the date. I am also a bit skeptical of the bottom of the mintmark as that does not look like a portion of a secondary mintmark.

Bob, I can now see why you wanted to see the top of the date. I missed the MD at the top of the 7 before. Guess I'm slipping up. I should have seen that. Mad I would suppose that tends to lean toward the MM being MD as well and it does look that way the more I look at it.

The north that appears on the mint mark falls into the die flow direction it apprears to me. Save it till your sure either way.

You are exactly right Steven, and you picked up pretty quick on why I wanted to see the top of the date. Although many things now point to it being mechanical doubling, there is still a chance it could be an RPM. Some time in the future, maybe you could send it to me for a closer look??
