I haven't been able to look at coins much recently but have been trying to keep up reading the forum. My wife went on a business trip to Chicago and Boston so I had to play Mr. Mom for a couple of weeks. When she asked me what I wanted, I told her a couple of rolls of pennies! She was across the strreet from her Chicago hotel (at the bank getting some rolls) when the storm that Carlb wrote about hit. She got drenched getting back and said that trees were falling and the scaffolding next to a building fell. She (and the pennies) made it back safely. Her stay in Boston was less eventful, but she did get about $8 in rolls for me. I was excited to look at predominantly P mint coins vice the usual D mint coins we have here. I wasn't disappointed and found my first two DDR bars! I also found this 1983 P coin which looks like a doubled "983" but dosn't have any markers of listed varieties. It has two die breaks to the rim from the bottom of the memorial so I was wondering if it might be a late die state of the 010 die?

The 06 with a bar is a nice example of a bar DDR.

I'm not sure about the 83.

I still remember that 68-d DDR that you posted a while back (that was you right?), if you can post a big pic (like these) of that coin and show the FG and AMERICA I think everyone will tell you it's the big rare 68-d DDR. Those are a very rare variety and seldom ever seen.

I don't think the 1983 cent is a true doubled die. You might want to zoom out a bit and then trying to post the pictures. It is hard to tell for sure when the pictures are too zoomed into the date.

nohea, after viewing your photos, I agree, that is a nice DDR, bar, but I don't think you have anything but a good example of MD, "shelf doubling". Sorry. Don't take my opinion as the "last word", because I have been wrong in the past, and most likely again in the future. Not to mention that after having my eyes dialated today, at the VA, I am still having trouble finding the right key to punch!

Dick,

That's funny! I was also at the eye doctor today, luckily I do well seeing up close (so I can see coins) but not well seeing anything far away.

Yes I'm not sure on the 83, it's either MD or die wear or possibly a minor DDO. Some of those minor ones on the dates like 84 1DO-003 and 1DO-004 and some of the 88 DDOs are easy to miss. If it is a DDO it's similar to those 84 DDOs.

Thank you all for looking at my coins. I just ordered a stereo microscope (received an unexpected award at work which just happened to cover the cost of the scope I was looking at!) so hopefully I'll be able to get better pictures. It isn't in the greatest condition but I am thinking of submitting the 1968-d coin for the PCI signature grading. It will be neat if it actually is authenticated as the DDR.

You'll need to can the bidirectional lighting for photos - it's confusing. Your light source should be coming from one direction as close to the optics as possible. With your lighting so far away from the source you have light on the sides of the devices instead of shadows - and with two light sources it only compounds that problem.
