Im not sure about this one.! There is notching on the A-M & R of America, but there is no notching on the N in cents that I can see.. The die scratches in the O (OF) show outside the the letter but not inside as decribed in the encyclopedia, however they do appear to be running the correct direction. I could be missing some micro details since in only useing a 16x loop for now.. Also, the A of America looks to be notched at the top as well as the bottom.. Can anyone tell by the pics if this is indeed the 84-1DR-001..
Gotta get a scope & retire this dang loop.! Smile

Can't really tell from the images, but what I can see looks a lot like machine doubling. A true doubled die would affect the outside edges of letters most of the time. Machine doubling shoves the die in a direction that the machines play in the dies. I see a mark on OF and inside crossbar on A and the P of PLURIBUS. These are not the areas would a doubled die would normally appear. I found a minor DDR the other day, that all of the outside edges of the numbers had a very small notch and a little mark above the E on CENT. If that areas marked like yours on the center and inside part of letters on the outside, the outside edges next to rim should show even more separation. Take a look and see if you can see the doubling?

If my machine doubled theory is correct, there should be distortion of letters/date on the obverse side also. Update if my theory is wrong.

Ditto what Coop explained.

The key thing is on his example you can see the doubling and sep lines. Notice that both images are similar height? That only happens on doubled dies, a strike double might show more doubling but one image is flat and the sep lines won't be lower than both images like it is on Coops coin. That coin has minor doubling but it's a doubled die.

I can see the doubling & the notches in coops pic, However, I could never see that minor notching with my 16x loop.! In fact, I have seen more detail on the '84 thru the pics below than can be seen with the loop simply because I can magnify the image up to 20x + with U-lead photo explorer.. Anyhow,The A of america is what confuses me.! I thought the doubling on the bar joining the legs of the A was for sure MD, but the top of the A looks notched & the right side is wider than normal, as is the right of the M..
I did battle with my loop & cammera to get a few more half way decent pics to try & show what im seeing. Im thinking that your right about the MD.! ("One cent" defenitely shows MD) I just want to be sure..

Thanks,CP.
