What is this caused from is it part of the lower leg of the "E"?

I would think it is one of two things. It is either a gas bubble, or a die gouge of some sort. I would try depressing it with something like a tooth pick or thorn to see if it gives a bit. That would verify that it's a gas bubble between the zinc core and the copper plating.

Hi Bob, thanks for the reply. I tried depressing it with a tooth pick but it doesn't budge so perhaps it is a die gouge.

Looks like bag nicks to me. Im the bag they tend to attack an area nd leave all kinds of footprints where they have been.
