Okay Dick - Here is the break down on the numbering system for trails and wavy steps
1998 - the year of the die
P, D or S - Mint
1, 5, 10, 25, 50 or 100 - denomination
DE - DESIGN EXTENSION
O or R - obverse or reverse
00? - die file number
WS= wavy step, T = trail, WST = wavy step + trail
So, the number 1998P-1DER-028T is
A 1998 Lincoln cent, minted in Philadelphia with a DESIGN EXTENSION on the reverse, number 28 die, with "trails".
I am the only one who uses this system and yes, itis similar to the one that Chuck has instituted. However, it does tell a lot of information in that number.

BJ,
I had already checked the listed markers but they didn't match . I think this one may be a bit earlier. Prior to the die chips shown.
I'll set it back to send.

BJ, I suspected the nomenclature was as you clarified, but didn't know whose system it was. It is easy to read, and understand. Does it affect any other varieties? The "DER/DEO was where I was curious. The "DE", mainly, because the wavy steps, and the trails neither come under the "Doubling" label. THAnks for the enlightenment!

BJ,
I found this 1996P 1DER-005T today and it shows the MDS die chip markers near the T of CENT but not the chip on the obverse at the date. It also shows a progression of a die crack in EPU. I think I can see it's beginnings on the one you have listed. I guess this one would have been soon after the one in your listings.

That area seems to be subject to die cracking (between the U and N of UNUM [see1996P-1DER-020T]). And these are not the only dies that I have seen with this type of cracking in that area.
As far as your attribution, you hit it on the head. Seems that you have hit the mother load fro "trails" up there (LOL).
Very nice find Steven, keep searching.

Where can we access the images of all the die trails you have listed to date. The more people with access to the knowledge of this type the sooner we can reach and/or surpass your estimate of 700. Thanks.

I am in the process of completing this years additions to the wavy step/trail files and hopefully by the end of this year/begining of next, they will be on the web.
http://www.1793.com/resources/traildies/traildies.htm
The files are up to 543 entries. It will also include the much awaited theory of how these anomalies are created.
I thank Frank Leone for putting these files on his site.
