I know it's not supposed to involve the mintmark, but I noticed extra thickness on the date and there is a split serif (looks like) on the "D" on the bottom left. One of the other pics I took shows a split serif on the top of the 6...I don't know so help me out here guys Wink

Okay Daggit, this die deserves a closer look. Now for a little surprise. If this were a doubled die then the mint mark would be involved and would show doubling the same way that the date does.

Now why? Beginning in 1990, the mint mark was applied to the master die, which through the working hub, applied its impression to the working die. So, if the working die is doubled, so may the mint mark as well.

Before 1990, the mint mark was applied to the working die after it was hubbed (before it was tempered) so the mint mark was not doubled along with the rest of the die if that phenomenon did occur.

A prime example of the doubling of both the mint mark and other design elements on the same die happened with the 1995-D Lincoln cent

Now, back to your coin. It looks like it maybe a doubled die, however, it must be in hand to confirm that fact. I would suggest that Bob P. take a look at it.

I agree... the coin could be a doubled die. A closer look is needed.

Sandra,
Although I have my doubts, I would like to take a look at this coin. The doubling looks like it's mechanical, but the notching is what I would like to see first hand. Can you send it to me for examination?

Thanks for the input guys, and Dick thank you but I'm saving my "enthusiastic out burst" till Bob takes a look at it to either confirm or not. Bob I will be happy to send it to you for further examination just message me with your addy and how you would like it sent, also I am unsure of the fee for this.
Thanks
Sandra
