How do you tell them apart (88 and 89) is this an 89? They look so similar.

Sandra, that is a good question! There is a difference in the "G', as far as I know. Seems there is a flared point, but don't quote me, because I haven't been able to see any difference. It usually takes real good eyes. Mine don't quite fill the bill.

Hi Sandra,
I found some that look similar to yours (89s that don't have the fancy details on FG) but think they're just bad strikes or die states that don't show the details not the wrong style reverse.
Here's a pic of what the initials look like on most coins:
Here's the one's I think are normal but they don't show the details:

Wow, thanks for the comparison photo's Ed. I don't see how anyone could tell them apart, your 89's look exactly like the 88 pictured. Think I will stay away from these ones I still have a rough enough time with identifying Doubled Dies

My exact thoughts!
Some of those 89 cent reverses look like the 88s.

Best way I can figure those out is the upper curve in the G.
The RDV 005 shows the upper curve of the G extending further to the east than that of the RDV 006.

Don't waste your time looking for a 1989 with the RDV-005.
The one you want to look for is the 1988 with the RDV-006. When you find that one there is no mistaking it. The serifs at the top and bottom of the right vertical leg of the "G" are a dead give away.

This is one variety that I keep an eye out for. It's still confusing at this point to me but in due time. Congrat's to you both.
