Just getting to know the later dates better but have no idea with the 20's, is this an indication of doubling or is it typical thickness? Thank you.

This would indicate typical thickness. As the coin wears, the devices tend to 'flatten' out. There are some genuine doubled die (Class 6) where there is extra thickness on the devices. There are other clues as to whether or not these are actual doubled dies or not, such as the distortion on the tail of the 9 in the date, the letters IBER of LIBERTY, and the slope like shape of the bottom of the E of WE, although that is not always the case. I suggest you take a good look at some of the class 6 doubled dies on the site. some good examples of what Class 6 distended hub doubling looks like on coins from the 20's can be seen here:

http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1927&die_id=1927p1do002&die_state=mds

These are circulated examples and should give you a good idea of what to look for.

When I viewed the pics, my impression was also normal circulation wear. I base this on the curved distortion of portions of the "2" and "5". Copper/bronze is pretty malleable, and circulation over time will gently flatten the digits. Portions of the digits with more metal will flatten out more, creating a bulge in respect to adjacent areas.

Sandra,

I understand your concerns. I think Bob is correct on his assesment. Perhap's a picture of Liberty and We could clarify your questions up.

Sandra,

This is also typical Die wear along with typical wear over the last 83 years.

Sandra,

When you see one that seems to have wide letters or the date look at the E of WE to see if it has a ramp on the lower horizontal bar, also look at the vertical spines of BER of LIBERTY to see if the spines look curved. On most class 6 DDOs they will show the ramp on the E and curved spines on LIBERTY. If you don't see either thing and only see wideness then it's most likely just wear.
