Ken,
Have you checked the markers yet? There are many similar dies for 1970. Some of them might have the bar L to go along with the high 7, whereas others do not. Check the markers and mint mark placement to be sure it is 013.

Hi Bob,All the markers match perfectly for the 013.The gouges, and the scratches on reverse are all there. In addition the supports for the roof are quite weak(but can be vagly seen) giving the impression of the "floating roof".Ken

Good job then Ken. You just attributed your own coin! As I said before, be very careful with all of the 1970 D/S high/low 7 varieties. There are many that are similar. In addition, I may have 2 or 3 more different varieties to add to the site like these. Mintmark placement is one of the first markers I look for when attributing these varieties. Congrats again!

Yes. They are all large date 1970S varieties. Basically either a modified hub was used, or a class 1 rotation resulted in extra 'bars' being seen above or below the horizontal crossbar of the 7 in the date. the rotation also affected the 0 of the date on some examples as well. The location of these bars is where the terminology high 7/low 7 come from. Some bars were well above the 7 and those were called high 7s.

What I would suggest is that you do a search on the site for 1970S doubled die obverse, and see some of the many examples we have here. If you are unsure of how to do the search, please let me know.

For now...here are a couple of links that will take you right to some examples:

Anything that looks different set aside for now. After you looks at a lot of the same date/minm mark coins, you then see what is norm. Go back over the different looking ones and thin out the normal ones. Save the rest for another time and see what you have later. I find if I set a lot of coins aside and recheck them later, then I realize they are just normal ones. Sometimes you find in them something you've missed and have to re-check the batch again. It happens. Your eye gets better/new information is brought to the fore.

Carol,
What are you using to search your coins? A magnifying glass, loupe, or scope? Lighting will be very important in identifying these varieties.

When you start looking for "Trails" and "Transitional" it get's deeper as you go.

Welcome to Coppercoins!
