I have some coins that have no rim, they feel flat, what is that called. Also when there is a definite split in the rim, that can be seen when the coin is face up. Might as well ask what is a broadstrike?
Thanks Teryble

If your coin is otherwise normal, then an absent design rim can be caused by several factors: A weak strike, inadequate upset of the planchet, excessive die convexity (a design flaw), or a combination of these.

Thanks Mike! Is this common? Is what I called a rim actually called the collar?

The collar is part of the press. It creates a flat edge. The rim gutter in the obverse and reverse die face creates the design rim.

Complete absence of the design rim on both faces is rare. Partial absence is pretty common.

To answer your other question, a "split" rim in an otherwise normal coin can be caused by several factors:

1. Finning of the rim. Excessive striking pressure forces coin metal into the thin gap between die neck and collar.

2. Die tilt. This causes increased pressure at one pole and finning in that area.

3. A slight misalignment of the die.

4. Collar clash.

A split or doubled rim is quite common.
