Came across this one today.Date is 1983.As seen in the scan there is something going on in the columns and a nice die crack on lower base out to the rim. There is also a die crack at the top left side of the arch in what I think is column 4 where the anomily is.Thank you in advance for all your comments,Ken

It does look like a pretty good clash to me Ken.

i have a handful of 1983 cents that look quite similar to that one....as far as the die cracks go i honestly believe that 1982-1983 were the worst years for abusing the dies, at least in my experience.i have a 1983 lincoln that looks terminal, die cracks at every corner of memorial building as well as through varying parts of United States of America...crazy year for cents 1983 was.

Well I hate to rock the boat on this one, but it looks more like a die gouge to me. You can see the tip coming out above the left cornice. If it were a clash, it wouldn't stop there. Also the clashes show up more on the third bay and usually don't flow into the fourth bay. So that is what I see on this coin.

ive got one i believe is 1983 ( its tucked away somewhere cant remember the date) but i can clearly see Abes beard and a faint "T" and a fairly bold "Y" as well as part of his collar, beautiful coin, if i can find it i will try to post some pics.

I guess this is one of the very few times I would disagree with you Coop. We have all heard of misaligned die clashes recently, and this looks like another classic example of one. In addition, it may be a multiple clash. I don't think the gouge mark you are seeing at the top of the cornice has anything to do with the clash.
As always, It would have to be examined to ensure the right answer is provided, but I am still thinking this is a strong misaligned double die clash.

i agree with bob on this one as well. I just found my 1983 clash and it is damn near identical to Kens except like i said before you can see a strong "Y" as well as abes beard, collar and some of his jacket creases and the crack is in the same spot but the one on my coin is longer and more pronounced. Could it be such a thing as the design changed enough or shifted when they made the proof dies as opposed to the old business strike dies from the '80s
