Here is a 1928-S Lincoln picked up at a coin show today. I wondered if anybody has seen this close placement of the mintmark before on the 28-S. And the "9" seemed to be thicker than others I've seen on cents from 1928.

We need to remember that mint marks were hand punched. It is not uncommon to see mintmarks this close to the date. I have seen these before on 1928S cents also. As far as the 9 being thicker, this too is a result of normal wear and tear as was the pic of the 1909 you posted. Keep looking though. There are a number of new discoveries for early Lincoln cents. You never know when you might find the next one.
