I've been following a thread on another forum where an individual claims to have a "silver" 1972 quarter. The coin has since been reviewed by the forum moderators and photos were taken (I'm waiting for confirmation of weight). It almost looks as if a 1964 quarter was re-struck in 1972. Here are a few photos:

(I'm not sure what happened to the photos I posted (blocked?), but you can click the link to view)

Now that's pretty interesting. Let us know what they determine after the examination.

Very cool coin. I misread the title of the thread at first, and thought it said "An overdate?". What I saw the picture, I said to myself... "that is no overdate, it is a double struck quarter."

I have to agree with your assessment that the coin is a 1972 quarter struck over a 1964. What I find the most interesting about this coin is that the alignment from the second strike is almost identical to that of the first.

Awesome coin!

Update: I got the final weight from the forum mods who weighed the coin: 6.23 grams, which seems about right for a 90% silver quarter.

Gabe, yes I found it interesting that the coin is also struck on the same side. Of course, there's no way to determine if the coin was hand-placed in the press, or it was simply luck of the draw? Confused

How could it be luck of the draw?

How could it be luck--to be struck on the same side and position?
Well, somebody please correct me if they know, but I only guessed a struck quarter could be fed in a number of random ways. However, if the unstruck planchet is smaller, would the mechanism properly feed an already struck quarter? Confused

Kurt, let me put it this way: If I were an operator, and as such, had the "option" to set the clearance for a "run", I would be very definitely able to position a "struck" coin in the chamber without any problems. Being a mechanic, and a millwright, I doubt there would be any trouble doing just that.
BTW, Kurt, Your PKG arrived today, while I was out getting a box of 2008-D cents, $40.00 dollars in half dollars, that are BU. A customer must have turned them in, and my "favorite teller" latched ontothem for me! They, the cents, and a box of 1/4's were the "loot" for the day. Needless to say, I have been busy!

All I can say is "Wow!". It is definitely a 1972 quarter struck over a 1964 quarter. It looks absolutely authentic.

What kind of "value" are we talking for something like this? You would think something like this has come up before? I am glad I do not work at the mint, I would get fired the first day for experimenting.

Dick,
So--you suspect a '64 quarter was manually placed in the press? I hope there's a random possibility too, because I'm sure the Mint/US Treasury doesn't look too kindly at deliberately struck errors that could generate personal revenue. Confused I don't know the source of this '72 restrike of a 64 quarter, but it doesn't appear to have seen much circulation.

Btw, glad you got the box of stuff! That should keep you busy! Laughing

Kurt, I would say that this quarter was "done" that way, as a curiosity thing by an employee, and that he very likely had no concept that it could, one day be found, and be worth a premium. Obviously not a collector, other than paychecks, and not to far out if reason that he didn't work there for any great length of time.
I was confused by your description of the other item. After seeing it, I discovered it will be great for reading my stick memory in a couple cameras. The discs went thru the welcoming procedure, in that they were scanned, and zapped, then formatted with FAT32. I use NTFS, but also have 98SE, so it needed to be compatabile. Now, back to the pile of quarters!

Looks neat but if I had it I'd get it slabbed.

If it was random it's like a one in a million chance, the orientation is heads to heads and they almost line up so to be random I'd think it was very lucky or would take a few tries to get it that close in rotation even if done on purpose.

I was just looking at the rev, and it was a darn good jog! The differences "fore, and aft" look to be right on the money, as far as sync is concerned. That HAD to be a manual set.
