People who send their cents to NCS generally are quite pleased with NCS's cleaning process -- I understand the cents generally look very very good.

So how does NCS do it? What do they do differently, and how do they prevent copper from turning ugly colors?

If they let out their secrets, we would all be doing it. They are very guarded about their techniques....and I personally don't know them.

I'm not sure what they do, but they do it well. The coin I have as my icon used to be quite hazy. It was an ANACS 64RB, after NCS did their thing it's an NGC 65RB.
