Hmm...I'm still looking for a 65-67 Lincoln cent with the S mintmark. Confused What's the story for these years--did San Francisco produce any coins, only without mintmarks? I find it a bit of a Mint oddity.

SMS means "Special Mint Set" if I'm not mistaken. I don't think they were quite up to "proof" quality standards or something like that.

You will not find mintmarks on 1965, 1966, or 1967 cents as they were not made. They also did not produce proof sets. The Special Mint sets (SMS) were struck on normal cent planchets, but with polished dies

I believe all of the business strike coins for 1965-1967 were minted in Philadelphia and Denver. The special mint sets were made at the San Fransisco Mint after re-opening in 1965. There were no coins minted in San Fransisco after 1955 until 1965, and the S mintmark was not used again until 1968. Basically, the only way to tell if a coin was minted in San Fransisco was if it were part of the special mint sets made with the polished dies.

'SMS' does not stand for 'San Francisco Mint Series'. It stands for 'Special Mint Set'. Not sure anyone else covered this.

The Special Mint Sets are the same thing as proof coins, essentially. It was a poor choice by the Mint, and they realized it soon enough to have only done it for three years.

I read some place one time a long time ago that all three mints struck coins for circulation, and it's impossible to tell the difference. That was their point.

A left-over rumor which is not true was that 1965 cents without the left dot in EPU were from Denver...not true.

Yep, the mint director at the time blamed coin shortages on collectors. Leaving off mintmarks was her way of making coins that nobody would want to collect.
