I was curious if I've found a potential new S/S variety for the 1948-S Lincoln.

But I also wanted to compare some mint mark styles just for curiosity sake.

The following pics came from coins obtained in a single roll. The coins seem evenly matched as an original roll, but perhaps it is/was not uncommon for coins frmo multiple dies to end up in the same original roll (that's a question for someone, since I imagine multiple dies were smashing out coins all at once and getting mixed together "pre rolling" by the mint or subcontractors)

I will show three coins here, with the date and mintmark of each. The third and final group of pics will also present the one I think might (hope ) be a new S/S variety Razz

Here is the first coin:

Now the second coin:

And finally the third coin, which might have the new S/S variety. Note what appears to be part of a second "s" in within the upper curl of the primary mint mark (unless it might be a die gouge), as well as maybe a tiny protrusion underneath the inside upper part of the lower curl (now THAT's a location description you have to think hard about !! ). Also note the die marker with the chip on the lip. I have multiple copies of this coin which exhibit the same characteristics:

So, at the end of the day, I was curious about two things:
1. The general style differences of the "s" mintmark. They do look similar, so is it perhaps just how these were hand stamped, in terms of pressure? The 2nd coin seems thinner and more open than the 1st coin.
2. Is there a chance the last coin exhibits a new S/S variety

Thanks in advance for your comments. Always appreciated!

I think they are all the same serif style S mintmark but as you said you see they look different due to the way they were punched and the pressure of the punch.

There are a lot of S/S for 1948 but most show on the serif.

They all look pretty normal to me. Like Ed mentioned the splits on the serifs would be a good indicator. But I don't see any on your coins. I've seen that same mark on the mint mark before, but always blamed it on a bad punch. There was one that you mentioned (I think the next to last image) that had a mark in the upper loop. Keep in mind if the die flow runs the same direction as the mark, it is probably die flow. It it rund in a different direction, it could be a scratch or it could be a RPM. So those two other factors have to be figured into the search for RPMs. Hope this helps.
