No big shakes here, but just curious about the "nooks" of the number 4. See the arrows I've added. I assume the extra metal is just chunks that accumulate in the corners. Does that come from die wear, or pieces that break off the die after a time and become filled in with metal ?

Also, just closing with a nice BIE photo for the heck of it, on the same coin. Common, I know, but looks nice anyway!

See the die flow lines in the fields? These flow toward the rim. So when you see these flow over a device, that is wear. Wear there is no strong die flow, it could be crumbling of the die or removed from a strong cleaning. There were normal when they started. They are just like us showing their age. They get much worse. Those early 50's dies were used till they died. (pun intended) some of the 1954 plain cents look terrible. I got a roll of them and they are just glorified slugs.
