It appears to be MD to the South and also to the North of the bottom of the S. Is this the normal MM that you find for 1972.

My thoughts would be coin damage. No machine doubling, and not an RPM.

The marks you see above the lower loop is just punch damage. If you look at several examples from different dies, you will find this. But Chuck is right on the center being damage. As to whether it has machine doubling, it doesn't matter. Its not a variety, just a normal damaged Cent. Put him back to work. A way to check to see if something is common or not is to look at several examples and you will notice a pattern that may be unique for that year or 3 three year period. But you are spoting things that seem minor. So your eye has developed. Now the tougher part: Figuring out what is just normal and pass it by. That is harder in one sense. Because you eye view everthing as a change, the minor stuff sticks out. When you really find a nice variety, it leaps out at you. So you might still be in the finding stuff too minor. So watch for the stuff that jumps out.
