Mary - They look like die scrapes rather than die clashes. A die scrape is believed to be caused by the ejection mechanism as it slides across the die face, marring that face, which will cause long lines to appear on the coin. On the Lincoln cent they normally travel from the northwest to the southeast and are usually seen on the reverse die.
Oddly enough, The CPG, Fourth Edition, Vol. II, pg. 219, shows a quarter with this type die damage, so it is not just isolated to the cent.

I'm not sure what's up there...I would need photos that are backed out enough to tell what I'm looking at.

Sorry, Chuck. I'm not great at this, but here goes. I just feel it's definitely something more than die gouges, but I could be wrong. LOL usually am. These are pictures of 2 different coins.
Two pictures of each.

2nd coin

BJ - if it was die scrapes, wouldn't it also scrape the design of the coin?

Maryjf, it looks like feeder arm damage, from the way it is oriented, and the fact that the lines are generelly all part oof the same damage pattern. I have seen this on many wheats, as well.

Mary: You have to think like a die. The die is the neagive of the coin it produces. So the field is the lowest spot on the design, but the field is the outside part of the die, where contact with the die can happen. The design is deeper into the die and thus when gouges happen, it marks just the field (outside of the die) and not affect the deeper devices on the die. So the only area that would be affected is the fields. Hope this helps.
