Hi, I think you're right about the leaf--nice die chip! Very Happy
As or the second 9 in the date, that's hard to say. It may just be old damage to the coin. However, if someone found another '59 with exactly the same damage, that would suggest something with the die.

Teri, could you give a full face shot of the rev, *date, etc?I don't find anything mentioned in the varieties section of Charltons, 2005 book, re MD, HD, clashed dies, or chips. UI'll look 5thru mine to see what is going on, and advise, or post a photo.

I had to scan the full coin, my camera cannot take good closeups and if I were to shoot it through my scope, it wouldn't give a full shot.

Tery,
That is definitely a die chip you have there but I'm afraid that my 1959 cent and other high grade coins of that era have that
leaf phenomenon (which looks like doubling) on them. I think it's part of the design. The edges of the maple leaves don't fall "perpendicularly" to the field of the coin. There is some sort of slope involved and the result is that, at certain viewing angles, it appears to be doubled.

I could be wrong on that but that's my opinion. Anyone else care to weigh in?
