Hi all! Found this nice suprise in my coins, I like the copper & silver together. I googled it and actually couldn't find out much about these, has anyone seen these before? I understand the outside of Reverse symbols have something to do w/ the Aztec Calender.

Teri, that is the "New Peso". That is why the "N$" is there. It is, (I believe), as I have not seen one, but the new coinage has a lot of the bi-metalic technology.

Teri: Or the 8 points of a compass? Don't know much about them. I have one Mexican coin that is marked $200. Worth a toss. (Going for distance!) Wink Wink Wink

It is a "new peso", made beginning in 1992. The outer ring is stainless steel and the inner part is an aluminum-bronze alloy.

It seems to me that the new 1, 2 , 5 and 10 pesos each feature a part of the Aztec calendar or sun stone.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aztec_calendar

The 1 peso reverse shows what look like compass points. This design is just inside the outermost ring of the actual sun stone.

The 2 peso reverse appears to be some of the symbols of the ring just inside the compass points.

The 5 peso reverse is the outermost ring of the sun stone.

The 10 peso reverse is the central part of the sun stone.

One "new peso" equalled 1000 of the pesos in the old system which dated back to 1905. To collect a 20th century Mexican type set is to get a lesson in inflation. Many coins go from relatively high purity silver to low purity silver to bronze/copper-nickel to stainless steel.

Laughing I hate when those coins "dial in" and the rest of my change falls through a wormhole.

Kurt, are you aware that the 1955 Can. cent NSF is known with both long, and short denticles? I just found out, and thought you would be interested. I may be able to post photos, (from Numicanada.com, "errors and varieties" forum).
