I am curious. Does anyone send their RPMs, OMMs or Double Dies to any of the TPGs or do you keep them raw?

For most circ DDO coins or RPMs I put them in flips and note the variety unless it is a very rare variety.

If I like one or think it's worth much more than the grading fees I might get it slabbed.

I agree. I think the "sladded coins", are more of the samthing as the buying "brand-Names", when generic will work just as well, and a whole lot cheaper! I have ONE slabbed coin, that I sent to ANACS, and ended up with a $35.00 quarter-in-a-slab, graded MS65. They have never gotten anymore chickens from MY hen-house! I have other slabbed coins, but none were paid for by me.

I was an advocate of slabbing early on in the early 90s when I started collecting a few valuable coins in earnest, but the only way you could do it was thru a dealer. Thats probably your best bet if you are going to do it at all. The rule of thumb I use is that if the coin is not valuable enough to you to warrant spending another $35-$50 or so, for the slab and the authentication then it is not worth it.

Particularly if you are submitting on your own. A couple of years ago I approached NGC at a coin show with some coins. You have to buy a membership, not cheap and it has to be renewed eventually. then they give you four free submisions. All four have to be the same, meaning all four have to be raw or all four have to be cross overs. I knew that and I gave them two indian cents and two GSA dollars. They charged me for the dollars. The reason I wanted the indian cents slabbed was that they were both 1908-S RPMs. I told the NGC person I wanted the Snow number on the slab.

She says ok, charges me another $7.50 for each and I run off. I got the coins back and there is no Snow number on the slabs. I called NGC and they said they dont attribute Snow numbers and why was I upset? I was credited $15. I said if your rep told me that you did not attribute Snow numbers, I would not have given you the coins. Duhhhh!!

Sorry, but this is not always fun and games. So my advice is dont slab anything unless its a valuable coin that would warrant authentication and attribution and you want the protection the slab offers and all that. But go thru a dealer. I use the Amos brand ANACS style slabs for less valuable but interesting coins that I want to highlight. They are a drab green, somewhat ugly, but do the job. I noticed it is also kind of difficult getting the small coins into the plastic insert. But I digress. Thats a story for another day. Laughing
