were used for San Francisco? I know that in 46 there were 3(plus inverted). Here is a different S that look's to be different, but it may be normal. Also does it favor the 1948S-1MM-001?

Looks like it has several hits, can't tell if it was an RPM.

Smile

I've only seen serif style S MM used in 48.
If there are sans-serif ones they are rare.

Thank's Ed. Perhap's it's due to wear and abrasion. It has taken a hit to the East. I don't know what the curve to the West could be. How have you been?

Looks like the die is VLDS. Very heavy die flow pattern. The 001 is not like that in shape. It seems too small to be a punching of the mint mark? Almost looks like the metal is raising there. I don't think it is a RPM.

David,

It looks like that area to the east (lower curl) got raised up from a hit then the upper curl got another hit to the west.

While you look at those 48-S cents keep an eye out for 1MM-004, it has good markers and the RPM along with the doubled die that shows on the T. Smile

Thank's Ed,

That one eluded me this time. I spent many minutes pondering several different coins to match the 2 different marker's. I concluded that they weren't the DDO-001 and the MM-004. It is tough to figure 1948 S out since the MM are punched so close on each Die. Thank's for your help.

David

1948S mintmark styles - I believe there are two, but one is very scarce.

The one you show is the common one. The other, I believe, is the 'ball serif' style like that of 1946S and 1947S.

Give me a chance to do some research and I will find the definitive answer on this.
