Just found this 95-D.

I'm not sure but it looks like it has a minor CCW shift from about 12:00 that shows on the date, MM (looks wide) the U of trust looks wide and maybe slightly on the top inside of the R of liberty. Sounds similar to the listed Die-1 but it's not because this one is CCW not CW.

It shows best on the 19 of the date, notice it has some ghost doubling going the other direction towards the rim but I'm talking about the doubling at the red arrows.

I'm unsure of this one... What do you think?? Confused
Just wanted to see what others think, I'm unsure and teetering on it going back into a roll. LOL

Added a better pic of RTY:

I'm trying to hang upside down to look at the other pics. Laughing

Thanks Jeremy,

I think you nailed it! Razz

I made a mental shortcut, I thought the only one on the site was the bigger one (1DO-003) and I did not look again so I missed it LOL. Embarassed

Now that I look at different angles it also has the doubling on TY but it doesn't show in my pics. It has some of the markers, concentric lines in USA and on the top of the obv. So I'm pretty sure it's 1DO-004 like you thought.

Also class 2 and 6 sounds right because the doubling goes to the rim on the date and to the rim on TY so since the direction is not only CCW (since TY is CW) plus the U is wide (class 6). Not sure if I made sense.... A CCW class 1 would have made TY be doubled the same CCW as the date but it's not, both go to the rim so that means it's class 2 (spread to or from the rim) not class 1 (class 1 everthing rotates the same direction). So that matches the 1DO-004 listing.

I found it in the last of 5 rolls I searched so now I better go back and re-check the others because this is easy to miss.

Glad I could help. Still learning the classes, but I've got Chuck's book for reference.

Thanks Dick,

It's that one:

http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1995&die_id=1995d1do004&die_state=mds

I thought for sure there would be another but I just finished looking and it was the only one out of 5 mostly mixed rolls.

LOL I know I had searched them before but I was looking for the bigger one and missed it.

Precicely why I quit returning a box of coins after I had "checked?" them, before I got into varieties. Now nothing goes back, AND, they get checked again, as often as I think there might be another "goodie". Carol, most people use a 10X poupe for checking. I usr a 10X, with a 20X to look closer, but then i go to the scope! There I can see it all, (which is usually nothing but my imagination). Mad Rolling Eyes Wink

I'll just say...this stuff is extremely subtle and I'm impressed you spot these. Finding IHC varieties is usually much easier by comparison.

Not to sound like I'm a @3#%75#(insert explictive) but when a Numbers or letters have a slide on the right, it is called machine doubling, but when it is on the left side it is a ddo

Am I'm right to say this?

Mike, that is the impression that I get, too, but I don't think it is "gosphel". The positioning of the dies, will affect that, being reversed. That scenario is not too often done , but it does happen, (intentionally, of course). It depends on the situation at hand. To compound the situation, the case of "skirting, for want of a better term, is what you have when the die is deteriorating badly. Yet another term is "shadow-doubling, where you see a wide "shadow" usually to the right of the numbers. I'm not sure about the letters. I have seen the "shadow to the edge, in the case of the letters in the Motto. Again, I'm not sure of the terminology, It could be the same as "flat-field" doubling, none of the above having any premium, to my knowledge. If this confused you, welcome to my world! Any, and all corrections welcome!

Mike,

What Dick said is right, most rules like that work on MOST coins but some will trick us Wink

Often ghost doubling from slippage or die errosion will go to the rim since when striking coins metal gets pushed from the center to rim and it slowly pushes metal from the die towards the rim like a glacier moving along a valley.

Doubled dies can go either/any direction.

For me the best clues are most doubled dies are not flat (so that rules out ghost ones) and they add to the normal design. Most strike doubled ones just add a shelf to the existing image.

So the key is look for extra metal causing the letter/number to be wider instead of a shelf added to the normal thickness.

Here's an example, this 1943 looks doubled but when you look close you can see the shelf is only into the existing numbers not added to them. Notice that the normal image got thin where the metal was smashed to make the second image. So this is only strike/machine doubling.

Myself I only use 7-20X loupes to search. The reason is I can adjust the angle faster by moving the loupe and I search a roll in a few minutes. Using a scope, many coins with any ramp (from die wear or polishing) along the letters looks like doubling. Still a scope is great for pics but you must set up the position/ramp/lighting to get it right.
