Apparently there is no danger that the Lincoln cent will go away after 2009. The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee announced that beginning 2010, "the reverse shall bear an image emblematic of President Lincoln's preservation of the United States as a single unified country."
The CCAC already had refused a design for 2009 showing Lincoln with a cannon and the words "The Union Preserved"
This information is from the Sept. 29 Coin World issue, page 80.

I personally hate all of these mint programs that change the designs of the coin a couple of times a year. Just stick to one design. If the desgin of the coin is attractive in its own merits, having to change the design many times a year will not be necessary to keep people interested in the series.

They also talked about using steel instead of zinc (like Canada cents) but I'm not sure if they finalized the idea.
I bet by 2010 they will be steel core.

ED, I believe you have it. The way the Canadian cents look, and feel is much better than the junk we have had to use since '82. The Canadian cents are, (frome the several thousand I have), a good composition, and hld up very well in general use. I would be happy with either composition, (Canadian), zinc, or steel.

I have read recently that the price of metals has stabilized enough so that it is profitable to make cents and nickels out of the present composition again. However....any spike in metals makes that profitability go away in a heartbeat.

Nothing like an $80 jump in gold spot in a single day, eh? With the way the economy has gone the past week, it wouldn't surprise me in the least to see all the metals, even the industrial metals, soar in value in the months to come. I still think the guvvument needs to be looking at a better solution for the cent's composition.

I agree, Chuck. I would also like to see the mint make certain changes, that would be a big help to everyone. Such as making the centchange face value to reflect it's value to be five cents. Change the nickel to be ten cents, Make a twenty cent coin, and drop the dime. It is too small!

Probably end up a Plastic Cent! Every other metal would probably exceed the value, even steel after the dust settles from the stock market!

Mike, it might be closer than you think! Not the plastic cents, the plastic for everything, or a chip implant.

I just re-read what I said a few months ago and still feel the same way....... I must be stuck in a rut. I also received one of these plastic Cents in a roll one time.

With the "chip implant", one would not be a coin-collector any more, No coinage, or currency . Only option them , would be women!
