Here is a 1872 H Newfoundland dime. This coin has a low mintage

Hi,
Canada actually never made a threepence; this one's from Australia and minted in Melbourne (mintmark is just below the date). If you look on the back, you'll see "Advance Australia" in the scroll. Smile

I think I'm now leaning towards VF30-35 In AUS, they'd say gVF, perhaps better. Aussie prices (AUS$) for 1921-m in F are $8 and $22 for VF. Nice! Very Happy

I collect Newfoundland too...I like those low mintages, and 40K is a good one! I don't see the front, but I'll guess from the reverse it's VF or better.

Thanks Kurt ! The coin was misidentified at my coin shop. The kangaroos should have been a clue Laughing It really has some nice toning which was not entirely captured by the photo. The peripheries on both sides are toned in blue. Also some red on the obverse. That is well captured.

The coin shop I frequent always has a handful of Canadian/ Australian/ and other British empire coins on the bid board. There are a couple of collectors that eagerly bid on them so its difficult to get one.

Gary, they must have rushed that one through for sale. Wouldn't it been great if that was a 1921 w/o mintmark? That coin in VF is worth around $100. Shocked Outside of varieties, the key Aus threepence is the 1915 with a mintage of 800K, cv is $275 in VF, $800 in EF. Values for Aussie coins go up dramatically by grade, and you found a very nice example!

Btw, if you collect Aus, I have an extra copy of the popular catalog used in Australia--"Australia Coins and Banknotes" It's the 2007 edition, but it's still fairly accurate--and much more complete than Krause. If you're interested, we might be able to swing a trade. Very Happy

Thanks Kurt. I will gove that some thought. I will have to pay more attention to the Canadians on the board and see if they are really Aussies. There are a bunch out there now.
