I always check out the new varieties added to the site and today I saw 1970S-1DO-019 was added.

My question is how do we know that is a DDO and not just another mark on the coin? It seems to be so minor. What type of DDO would this be? Class III design hub doubling?

I put it there, and examined the coin. This is but one of a group of coins that ended up with a piece f a cross bar of a 7 above the digit on 1970 and 1971 cents. For some reason it only happened those two years.

How do I know it's not just a 'mark' on the coin? Because it's raised. Giving you that one, how do I know it's not just a mark on the die? Because it's softened with die wear, it's horizontal and just above the digit in the date like other dies that have the same anomaly PLUS a bar below the L of LIBERTY to match.

This coin was somewhat brown, a little worn, and the die was a little worn too. It was difficult to photograph, but it was there.

I am sure I would have missed that one or dismissed it. Thanks for the explanation.

Like Bob said there are some that have the bar above 7 plus the bar below the L. In John Wexlers old book he lists one like that as MH-2-O-VII and says they can be from all 3 mints.
The pic has the bar above 7 plus the bar below the L and the bar below the L looks like a strong well formed tear shape with the point towards the rim and the drop inward.

I found a 70-P with the same sort of tear shaped bar below the L but nothing shows above the 7, maybe it got polished away. Nice spread and fairly strong.
I'm sure there's dozens of minor 1970 DDO cents. Smile

Hi Ed,

Look again...that weren't Bob who said that.

Anywho...I do agree that there are a number of doubled dies for 1970 cents. I think any small part of it may have to do with the small/large date thing, but that's not fact - just conjecture.
