A friend has found an 1907 IHC with a strikingly large die crack on the reverse. Cracks I've seen on the reverse usually extend from the shield or the wreath, following the peripheral design for a while then reconnect to the rim. Perhaps I have not looked at enough IHC reverses, but I have never seen a crack that bisects the coin this way. Isn't this the stronger part of the die? Any thoughts?

I would say yes, it is, and I believe that a crack like that had to have been brought on by an extremely jhard shock, to have caused that klind od break. I have noticed on the Can cents, that some of them have a crack that follows the string of beads, part way around the die. Sometimes on both edges of the die. Usually on the obverse.

Thanks--the owner is in Australia, where die cracks happen to be very popular.
Dick, I would have to agree w/ a special case like regarding shock, as well as the die made with some internal weakness perhaps? I'm simply speculating because this is a new one for me. Here's another detail provided by the owner:

Repunched E? On this coin? Do you see something like that?

Kurt, if it isn't a re-punched "E", then it must be a small MD, but I sure see "something" there. Might be a paint spot on my glasses. Been doing some painting, and sheet-rock repair.

Hmm...it could be a mark on the coin, or possibly paint.
I'm seeing some discoloration, but no actual relief. Since the reverse hub contained the whole design (excepting 1908), you'll only see DDRs of various types. I have an IHC DDR that's been hubbed with two different dies.
