1937? DD?

Hi all, Just found my stash of "old world coins". I have to clean them, but this one looked great & I do believe it is a double die? What country is this from? It is really big, over an inch in diamater

LOoks like Great Britain to me. Brittania is on the reverse. Why are you going to clean them?

Soaking in mineral oil & lightly brush off surface dirt.

Whew! Youn had me worried there, for a minute!
I can't say yea, or nay, because I am not sure. It is a nice looking coin.It is NoT Canadian, as the cents with that date were small cents, much to the disgust of the French-Canadians in Quebec, in 1920 JE ME SOUVIENS! WAS HEARD FAR AND WIDE!
Not kaving a Krause handy, I can't identify. Kurt, I'll bet you can pin it down, without breaking a book! Unless that dot, just below the efigry, indicates it was minted in Perth, I am clueless.

Yep, a UK penny. UK never puts their name on their coins, perhaps to avoid naming/language conflicts with Scotland and Wales? Not sure there, but I know that's why Switzerland chose Latin on theirs.

I'll admit the only doubled dies I've studied are Australia pennies and halfpennies where the doubling has been rather dramatic. Do you see notching of serifs anywhere? Since the second image seems to cut into the devices, I might tentatively guess it's MD.

I looked a bit longer at the images, and believe it is MD, as well.
Sorry, Teri, but it does mean you are "sighting-in" on the doubling,and will soon have them under control. That is good!Dick

Acetone is ok if you need to use it but on something that nice brushing might destroy it. Try only soaking in acetone and a thorn if you need to nudge some blob of goo loose. If the stuff is stubborn try dipping in hot water before the acetone/thorn.

On that coin I don't think I'd do anything

I'd only brush a coin if it's already ruined or corroded.

Figures, still nice coin. I already "closed-up'd" 2 letters, so here they are w/ my wanting to see splits!

Teri, I think you might have something there. It looks like a separation line on the spine of the "E", and on the curve ofthe "G". I don't tie the upper arrow on the "E" to anything, because it should be on the bottom of that upper cross-arm, to indicate a split, if I'm not mistaken. I may not always be right, but I'm never wrong!

I see the marks you've pointed to and it's hard to say without having specialized knowledge about the die tools, since those may simply be the edges of the punch. I only wonder that because they all seem to align to letters--but these are just my guesses.
