1896 Finland 5 Pennia

A new find, an 1896 5 Pennia from the Tsarist occupation--a scarcer mintage of 410,000.
I particularly like the color of these coins, but it's tricky to approximate in photos. Here the highlights are exaggerated. It has a rim bump and what may be surface planchet defects, but nice overall details.

I could be Finland or Russia--the N was for Nicholas II.
If there are Finnish denominations on one side, it's Finland:
Penni, Pennia, Markkaa.

Kurt, your info re the coin shown above, reminds me of when I was collecting any coin that was minted, post Ancient, and Mideieval. It didn't take long for one to become "Multi-lingual". Having to learn to read foreign languages, to tell what country, denomination, who the Monarch, or who-ever was the "honcho" in that country. Translating the dates used, into the calendar in use today. Gregorian, I believe. Along this very topic, there was a "contest", if you will, as to the identity, denomination, and composition, as well as series of a given coin. One posted, and a week was allowed to determine what it was, and then the poster would id the coin. Most took very little time ti be identified, and the one who did so, posted a coin in turn. There are 37 pages of coins listed! It, in itself would be a very good reference to world coins. I knew a couple of them, by country only, but was thrown for a loss with one of our own, and to make it worse, one of the series I collect by the roll! If anyone would like to read thet thread, it is on CCF. I was trying to re-locate it, but forgot the name, or title of the thread. Kurt, you posted once, or twice there, do you recall the name of the topic?

Yes--that's a great thread, called "What the coin", now on page 37. I played a few times myself.

Kurt, right! that is tjhe one. It has ended. They thought they would take a break. It is a very good source of info, re world coins, in that the coin is shown, and the info is explicit, and complete, enough that one can verify the coin in hand, if it be one of those shown.. I just happened onto it, and went back to the fiest post, and the rules, etc. I read it thru the end, and was very satisfied with what I saw and read. You know, because you, too were there. We could use comething similar here. It would give everyone a chance to "play", and learn as well. I wiould enjoy participating.

yes, thanks. they all seem to tone to the same shade of brown. The 5 penny is much larger that the 1 penny. I should have put a reference point in there. The one penny is smaller than a dime. The 5 penny is about the size of a US Large cent.

Dick--I liked that contest too. I've been pretty busy, so I stopped playing the other game, but it would be fun to start here with enough interest to keep it going.

Someone would start by posting a coin photo, perhaps hiding some identifier like country name of denomination. The person who first guesses the country/denom would post a new pic to stump everyone, and so on. Sort of like an ongoing coin quiz.

Good idea. I am not too famiiar with world coins, but I would participate. I always thought it would be a good contest to see if someone could identify the date and mintmark of a coin by looking at a particular diagnostic. An obvious one would be a pic of a 3 Leg Buffalo. There are lots of coins like that.
