This one is similar to the one on ebay.
Notice the area that looks like an RPM but I'm thinking it's erosion/die fatigue.
This coin also has a bar below the L of liberty and doubling on the 9 that might be caused by the same thing.
My theory is these are caused by die erosion. It also seems like in 29 (and other early years) they punched the mintmarks very deep so maybe it takes more metal to fill them so it causes more erosion as the metal fills the deep mintmark.
Any thoughts?
Also... what's the right terminology for this? I'm thinking abrasion is related to polishing but these seem to be more likely from die fatigue/erosion from metal flow so would the right term be erosion instead of abrasion?

The correct term is 'die wear' - and you are correct that abrasion has to do with polishing...not die wear.
And I agree with your assessment that this is a normal coin.

I am not to sure that this is a "normal" coin. I believe that the anomaly under the L of LIBERTY is an extra bar that first cropped up on the 1915-D and is listed on site as 1915D-1DO-001 (and listed in both CONECA and Wexler's files as well) as a Class VIII doubled die.
Since this particular of anomaly occurred over a period of time, on different working dies, it may have been a faulty hub collar that improperly seated the hub causing it to tilt and then snap back into the correct position during the hubbing. I have 10 different variations of this doubling, starting in 1915 and going up to 1928 (if this is one, then this would be the latest die).

BJ,
It's possible.
The reason I assumed it's die wear is the MM shows something similar and if you notice near that extra bar there's some strong looking flow lines going to the rim (above and below the L) and I assumed the same flow might make the bar and the bar seems to have an angle that matches the flow line direction.
But then it's pretty strong so anything is possible.
Similar to the 29-s on ebay they both have a lot going on
Hey Bob, if that was you that picked up the other one maybe you can tell us if it has a bar below L when you get it

Ed,
That is my bid on the one on Ebay. Still another day and a half on the auction. If I win it, I will let you all know whether it is an RPM or not, or whether it has a bar L.

Is there a way to better tell if the bar L is a doubled die or die wear?
I just found a bar L on a 1915-D that looks like a possible DDO.
The thing that makes me uncertain they are DDOs is both coins do seem to show some die wear.
Can this be caused by die wear? I don't see it so bold on other years so often as the teens.
I'll put up another thread with the 15-D when I get pics, it's a very nice coin so it should show well.
