Could this possibly be the MM 004? As you can see it's in a "bumpy kind of state"..LOL sounds the a song title.

Did you find that in circulation?
That would be amazing!
Even if it is an RPM I doubt anyone can say for certain.

Ed, i have a question avout this coin condition: What causes it to look like it has been "varnished? Did they use varnish to help preserve the coin's conditio? i have read of this in various parts, but neglected to ask before. Thanks, and while you are at it, check out my new camers! These shhots are of the old setup.
I still can't believe how they turned out! Just hand-held. my new setup is "in the "making".

Dick,
They did varnish coins, acetone takes it off. Iv'e seen a lot of unc or cleaned wheats with varnish. They look funny if they were circulated after being varnished. As they circulate the varnish comes off the high points and those areas re-tone but the protected areas stay bright.
That 1911-d looks corroded and getting porouse, maybe it was oiled or possibly varnished. Oil helps stop corrosion.
Yes I bet your new camera will get good pics.
Looks like you were busy working on the setup!

I agree--that 1911-D looks almost like it was buried at some point.
Dick, wow--what a setup! I hope your new system is a bit less involved, that looks like a huge amount of work. I guess I'm simply not patient with this stuff.

Ed, Yes, I'm still working on it. that box is the old setup, camera, and all. It has been removed. I am trying to make something similar to Kens, picture, but at the same time complete in its' own place. So it will take some thought, and time. It will be "put together" with clamps, etc until I like what I see, and then comes the glue, screws and wiring. It will be portable, and have it's own outlets. It depends on how my 15 watt halogen light works. It was designed to be incrusted in the ceiling. meantime, back to the drawing board!

Dick, that's impressive from a mechanical standpoint.
The armature holding the camera looks very sturdy too.
Good luck with your setup!

Kurt, that is the base for the camera. taken from a tripod. I have the legs, in caseI want to use it as a tripod, again. I have two, in fact. the other is used for table-top service, or another setup. What you see is no longer there.
You mentioned you moderate on another board. I would like to know, that I might go there, and learn somethng new. I figure a day when I don't learn something new, is a day wasted!

Yep, my motto too--most of the mess we see around us now is from assuming to know something, when we in fact do not.
There's a new world variety/error forum on CCF, where I pitch-in, and learn new stuff!

Teri, Another old saying, "A bird in the hand is worth 100 flying"!
"Mas vale un pajaro en la mano, que cien volando!
No it is not the one you are used to hearing, but it means the same. You have your coin, whatever it's condition, and shape. You can hold it, and know it will be a part of your collection. If you wish at some later date, to replace it, fine, but until that day comes, you still "have your bird in the hand"!

Ed, Back to the "setup". I found some foam bubber about a 1/4" thick, and tried it on the 50 watt light, I mentioned. It might work in a dark room, but when I tried it under the 20X/40X scope, it gave me the lighting I wanted, with my finger in front of the light, (on the scope). It lights everything, and there is no indication of the source of ligjht, therefor, no shadows!. maybe I'll get it yet. It is fun , clamping this to that, and checking it out to see if it will work. Sure a lot cheaper than a dark-room, or a light studio. those are far out of my reach. I'll "improvise", and see "whot hoppen"?

Tery,
In my opinion if you do anything to disturb the surface of a coin you have taken away any value the coin might have had. BUT an 11d like yours that is filler is worth around 5-10 bucks, SO in this case you are out nothing if you clean it, but you can not increase it's value.
Just my 2 cents worth!
Cheers,
JAY
