Was getting a closer look at my oldest cents tonight. I don't like to disturb them, but was photographing the best ones and found this. Kinda looks like machine doubling, but then..tripled?
The date is doubled. I don't think the doubling in the second 1 is machine because it goes 3/4-way up and abruptly stops!

The tripling is very evident in the "R" and somewhat clear atop some of the other letters in LIBERTY.

I would have concluded the Liberty looked like machine doubling but the 0 in 1910 looks like a double die to me. If it is would this be a new find ?

Nice coin there Murphy ... have you compaired this with other 1910/s, could be it's a MDD (master doubled die), defiantly has some Machine doubling but then again it looks to have other doubling as well. In date with top (left side) of 1st 1 and bottom leg of 9 as well. Try some different angles of light and see what result/s that produces, or tipping the coin somewhat.

Gorgeous pictures tho ... congrats on your photo/s, and find if it is what you think.

Thanks guys, as far as I know, if this is indeed true doubling ...or tripling, it would be a new one. I'm not aware of any doubled 1910's, however there is a 1910-S/S in Chuck's book as well as that other thing with pages(lol) CPG, both great books.
I got some new photos, some are kinda big so I'll just link them. I'm not familiar with extreme tripled machine doubling, which shows up most dramatically all over the "R" in LIBERTY and is also seen in some of the other letters there. It starts in the top of L and gets progressively deeper in each letter to the right until the deepest doubling is seen in the "Y". Isn't that an indication of true doubling? I dunno. I have no idea how to interpret this:

The best case for true tripling I think is in two places, on the left side of the "B" in Liberty and the right side of the second "1" in the date. In both places it seems as though the doubling is doubled!

To wrap up, I think there is weird doubling/tripling here, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to interpret it. Help Chuck! Smile If you want to look at the coin, I would be glad to send it to you for axamination.

The coin looks to have machine doubling to me. I see no signs of real doubling on the coin. The liberty shows clear signs of machine doubling, and the 0 of the date also does appear to show machine doubling.

First off- great pictures. You did a nice job of highlighting them also to show us just what you mean. I would have to go with machine doubling, and the left of the B in LIBERTY would be a die gouge. This may be a good thing for you because whenever I post an opinion of MD, Chuck usually responds with the next post saying-NO DOUBT _ GREAT FIND_TRUE DOUBLED DIE___ So I hope history holds true and I am wrong.

Sorry, it's machine doubling - all of it.
