Thank you, Mike! I guess that clears that question. Looks like Ed had it pretty well pinned, die wear.

The first coin in this post is probably worn machine doubling. The hard edge of the doubling has been beaten down and worn some over time.
The second coin has a die gouge protruding inward from the rim. It is not THE rim, just a gouge sticking out of the rim.
Sorting coins is by far fastest and easiest by using the ten container method. Sort all coins by the LAST digit of the date into ten containers marked zero through nine. When completed, sort each container by decade as you look through them. This method requires less time, less handling, and fewer containers than any other possible method.
One of the first and foremost reasons why sort the coins - because when you look through a gob of mixed dates, you might miss something subtle that you would probably notice if you had piles of all the same date to look through.
Imagine having to discover the wide AM / close AM hiccup with the coins all mixed up by date. I doubt anyone would have noticed them that way. The only way anyone would have noticed them is to have a number of coins of the same date laid out and just happened to pick up on the design difference between them.

Mike, the (K, 20XX), 90's, '80's, are the decades marking the rows of toube. where I am using the whole decade for one box, then it is P, D, S. Youwill find a way that works for you, and it will be after several trials of other methods. Chucks method is the easiest to handle, and I used it for a long time, before working out my way. To each his own. what ever works for you is the best one. I hope this helps.

Yes it does all.
Thanks for the input.
Dick, I now understand how you do it.
now gotta get them ordered. I seen where "jakes" had some good prices on the box and sq. tubes.
Good to see you on here Chuck. Is the move going good.
Just out of the blue, how many boxes does any one have and how often does one go thru 'em.
I know I've spent allot of time going thru 3 rolled boxes.
Also "santa" brought me 3 books...... any of them good for reference.
"Strike it rich with pocket change"
"A quick reference to top lincoln die varieties"
and
"2009 red book"
Thanks all
Mike

Mike,
I'd start with a tube for each type so there's about 110 tubes for memorials. (that is if you split the 7 different 1982 and 4 different 1960) Everyone uses different methods but that works for me.
As for going through them! We often joke that we find good RPMs or minor DDOs in ones we already searched and it's true. Either they grow them in tubes or as you tune your skills or viewing methods or find new varieties to look for you find ones that were missed. Some types you gain a nack for noticing like bar DDRs, class 6 DDOs & DDRs or wavy steps and minor RPMs then you start finding them.
Often people say ebay unsearched rolls are already searched and it's true but the previouse searcher might only have looked for keys or major ones and most of us are the same. We start out looking for 1909-S VDBs then branch into looking for other goodies so I'm always eager to search or re-searching anything. Having them split by date and MM makes it easier.

Mike, I can only speak for myself, but i'll tell "my version"!
The book you mention , "Strike it rich with pocket change, by Ken potter, is one of my books. io bougjht it before joining CC.com. It is nice, but is too generalized for a collector. If you are looking for a "winning lottery ticket", you will have just as much chance of finding the 1955, "biggie"!
Chuck has his books on the lincoln cent and the varieties, (Not the actual name, but I also have it. Now there is a good reference foe searching for varieties)!
The "Red Book, everyone has, aor should have one for mint records, and included info. however, like buying a new car, the minute you leave the dealership, it has lost a LOT of it's value! The book, when you receive it, (any book, for that matter), is "out of date", even before it hits the streets. normal evolution.
Sorry if I get any Katsup, or grease on you. i'm enjoying sopme fries, and a 'burger!
Now for "then boxes"! I go thru a box of cents from the bank, ONCE. The next operation would be thechecking of any particular dats/mint, for varieties. This involves my scopes. then the ones that I want to have attribuited, I send to Bob, and he lets me know how many Boo-boo's I made. I do get one right, now and then. I use the site search info, and get quite a few that way. I miss a few there, as well. I'm only human, ( altho I have also been called "You animal", among other things)!
One other thing: When you are using the boxes of "tubes, sq, or round" remember, there are 100 tubes, which if full equal TWO boxes of 50 rolls. I save the boxes from the bank, (and also ask for any that are empty), to store the rolls of coins that are sorted, but not checked, yet. Later, as you accumulate boxes of cents, you will fill the tubes, and they will go in these boxes, eventually by decades.
The '82's, I weigh, and separate by Zn,m 2.5 grams, or Cu, 3.11 grams. And by large date/small date. This is the time to pay close attention to them for that "biggie", because if you have one, it will show!
The ones I have checked, usually will go back into the return box, although I don't return many, because I'm not that sure of having found all the "goodies"! The returns are mostly the coins that have "self-destructed, and are no good, the damaged ones you can't read. That includes the washers, tokens, etc.
One book I would recommend for good info is the "Plaid Book", as it is commonly known, but whose title is, "The Error Coin Encylopaedia, By Arnold Margolis, NLG and Fred Weinberg, NLG. It takes you thru the whole "shebang", and explains the operation, from start, to finish.
Last, but not the least, is Chucks book, Looking Thru Lincoln cents. Chronology of a Series. by Charles D. Daughtrey, NLG. I highly recommend it!
Dick

The move isn't really 'going' yet. That's not until the 15th, but I am eagerly awaiting being home, in my own office again.

Chuck, that is good news! I'll be waiting to hear when you are settled, and, "back where you belong"! May your New Year bring you peace, and quiet, and freedom from STRESS! A special wish: If it can't be cured, let it stay as is, and not get any worse. GOD Bless!

Okay, then I will have them deliver a couple of cases to my Missouri residence once I get back. I should have them by the end of January.
