Thanks to a friend, I got this fantastic 1933/2 overdate to study.
I've been looking for months, and he found me an especially nice example. Very Happy

A particularly interesting aspect of this coin is how much detail it shows to suggest the process used to create this variety.
Judging by the details on 93, clearly this coin was double-hubbed with the 1933 date versus a correction made to simply the last digit.

When studying die varieties, I've found it's useful to shoot from several lighting angles to bring out different details. Here the second shot has brought out a little raise detail in the lower half of the 3 that suggests the diagonal of the underlying 2. Taking a tracing of a 2 from a 1932 penny helps show how various features of the digit match up. This is also a good example of how details drop out on overdates when a die is resurfaced before a new date is impressed. That's probably the case with the right-hand outer curve of the 2. Confused

Definitely--an overlay helps point out the smaller details of this overdate, and I think it's an earlier die state by comparing to other coins. This is probably the best-known of the Aus overdates, along with the 1934/3 threepence.

Dick, thanks! What's great about this camera setup is I often spot things only after I examine the photos in detail. This is why I always shoot from several lighting angles. I have seen a lot of pics of this overdate, but never signs of re-hubbing in the other digits. Very Happy

Kurt, my first thought when I saw the tip of the deuce, sticking out of the three, was a die chip. but it was too "perfect" for that. Then your 'overlay sure confirmed ths thrth. I can't see too much of the rest of the "2", but it sure is there.
I haven't done anything about my new camera yet. Been too bust, inventorying mt Canadian coins. whew, there sure were a lot! Now, with that out of the way, and my 'flu-bug under control, maybe I can read the book one more time, and make sense out of what I read! I "gotta get some fotos like yours"!

Is the mark behind the first 3, a clash mark or just a die scratch or a die crack. There is another mark between the 3 & 3 that looks like some thing happened to this die?

Coop,
This is a good example where several lighting angles help. Very Happy
After I shot this coin, I realized there was some lint which got my attention in one shot, since explained by the other (detail below). The interesting detail here is the raised line of metal, most visible in this lighting angle, which is quite prominent under a scope. My overlay suggests it's a remnant of the 2 diagonal.
