Hi Bob,Happy Holidays. It's just green junk. It's hardly even noticable with coin in hand.No evidence of any damage in those areas.

Thanks Ken. You may want to give this thing a bath in some goo-gone, mineral oil, or acetone to try and remove that stuff. I would be interested in seeing how nice it cleans up. However, if you do decide to try and clean it, please be careful and don't scratch it up.

Try getting the verdegris or whatever it is off, sometimes it can be removed without a problem but if it stays too long it eats into the copper. Try it with acetone and a green thorn.

kimseyco, Welcome to the forum! A new "face" is always welcome. I'll leave the '
"green thorn" to the author! It is "one of our secrets"!

Something to nudge the bad spots of gunk off, a dry thorn might make a scratch but a soft green one is less likely to.
Some things aren't going to come off but acetone with help of a thorn will get some gunk off or stop an active spot of something from growing bigger.

kimseyco, you have the method, but the thorn is from a rose bush.
What kind of "water pik"? You got me there, Mike?

Hey guys, I am new to this forum. I post on Coin Talk a lot but not friendly there toward the above described techniques. I use mineral oil and put coin in an Intercept Shield holder to secure coin so I can hold green rose thorn with one hand and loope with another. I use the cut out from the air-tites that come in packages of 100 (from JP's Coin supply online). They fit exactly in the IS holder and therefore do not let the coin "fall" to the bottom of the holder which impairs ability to remove the gunk. Been having great success with Verdigone which Bad Thad sells if you PM him on Coin Talk or NGC boards. This stuff is a miracle cure for stubborn verdigris on AU or below coins. He does not recommend on MS coins.

I need to get some of that verdigone. I should find him and send a check. Been meaning to do that.
Anyhow, a 'green' thorn means just that. A rose thorn off a living plant carefully glued to a toothpick (the handle) and some Goo-Gone or mineral oil can be used to pick 'crud' off your coins, as long as you do it very carefully. The best way to learn how to do it and how not to do it is to use common circulated wheat cents to get a feel for the process.
