If you have a scope, you can check the "test coin(s), before you do anything. note particularly the general surface, being smooth. Then do yout removal, and check the coin again. If it went well, there should NOT be any veryfine scratches there, where you checked, prior. If it went wrong, you will see the scratches all over!
