I see nothing wrong in asking the approximate value of an error coin. There is no accurate price guide because there are too many variables at play.

I agree that this can be a delicate subject. I have no great fondness for crass commercial inquiries. At the same time, many collectors are simply curious as to the value of their finds. I suppose it should be approached on a case-by-case basis.

You both have a good point. It is common knowledge, that there are many ebay sellers on the various forums, and it is easy to "ask", as if it were from a novice. Often it might be good to just give a link, or a reference to one of the many sources of this info. Like Mike says, there are too many intangibles in play, to be very specific. thank yo both, for bringing this opoint out. Maybe some of the same sellers will realize their fault.

I think the thought of "striking it rich" is one of the things that gets people interested. Some people start with only that thought but it grows into more and later the interest in coins keeps them going. In reality I doubt that most people can get rich by finding rare coins, so much time spent and sometimes few finds so in the end we better like it or it's not a bargain.

Actually, I am quite surprised to have gotten that response from you. I don't know of anyone that is more polite than I am, constantly praising the site and thanking people for the time they take to message me. If you look back over all my posts, which is only about 40 or so, you will see that I am a novice coin person who received a load of coins from my Grandfather a couple of years ago. I knew nothing about them, or had any real interest, until finding this site. The people here have been so helpful and insiteful, that a person couldn't help but to get excited about some of them. I certainly hope that the majority of the people here do not share your disdain for my lack of knowledge, because it takes the wind right out of my sails and the excitement right out of the whole hobby. I would like to apologize if I have offended anyone, and thank the people who have so selflessly helped and guided me along the way. If I knew the answers, I wouldn't need the site. I thought that is what the forums are for.

This is one of the best sites for accurate answers. Most sites let anybody in, the admins here keep the troublemakers away. Every now and then we get into a tiff with one another, but come on, who doesn't at some point?
I'm surprised to find out it's authentic. I thought it was a basement job but I wasn't going to say so because... I didn't know.
Congrats on your find. Authentication and certification might not be a bad thing for this coin.

I am pretty certain that hope no one purposely meant to offend you slikrep. We do have a very knowledgeable group here, and we try to guide novice collectors in the right direction. Some people's ability to put thoughts into words is sometimes a little rough around the edges.
I apologize if any one of our members had a response that seemed less than genuine and sincere. We were all novices at one time or another. I hope this does not keep you from continuing to ask questions. I value EVERYONE here as an integral part of the coppercoins family.

The one thing that I would like to make clear; it was I that asked Mike Diamond to join this discussion on this error coin. I did feel that it was an error, however, I lacked the detailed information necessary in explaining just what happened. That is the reason why I did ask Mike to add his thoughts for I trust his word above and beyond any other error expert in numismatics.

BJ, I'll second that, for the very same reason. I have known Mike, longer than I have been a member of this forum. He knows his stuff.
