I 'll bet that's what it is, Smed. There are not too many examples of coins that are rusted over their entire surface. Here is a pic of an 1876-CC dime struck by dies rusted on both surfaces.

Looks like the strike through was something like thread. The curved part makes me think that.

Even though the outcome seems to be rusty dies, this coin remains one of the most interesting in my collection. It's unusual and has a struck thru (thread). It won't be going in my reject box. Very Happy
