Just to point out something that everyone is overlooking; Gabe's nickel, CDDO-001, was NOT the first reported doubled die that was produced by a single squeeze method. If you all remember, Ken Potter report that this type of doubled die existed awhile back on I believe Canadian coins.
I am almost positive that the U.S. Mint had wind of this and was well aware that single squeeze die did produce doubled dies.
Another point to ponder is that in 2003 we were flooded with wavy steps (doubled dies) from that year. In 2004, the wavy steps were dramatically reduced. I alone have 45 different dies from 2003 that show wavy steps while I only have 5 different dies from 2004. The were made aware of this problem and to some extent fixed it
Last year, we experienced a rush of obverse doubled dies on the Lincoln cent from Philedilphia Mint and a bunch of reverse doubled dies from Denver. Only a few of those being wavy steps and mostly from the Philedilphia Mint. Not surprisingly, most of those showed at the end of the year, when production is at a peak to meet the quota for the year.
What is in store for this year; only time will tell. Believe me though, the U.S. Mint knows much, much more than we will ever know about what goes on behind its doors. As far as training goes, that is a government catch word; the more training that they can give a person in their respective field, the happier the government is. I can not remember a time that I didn't have a period of over three months that I did not attend a training session of one kind or another while I was in the Navy for twenty-one years.
One last thing, the Mint will produce a doubled die this year, I will bet my bottom dollar on it, whether it be a major or a minor, it will happen. Lets find it. You all find something good, they are out there.

BJ- doubled dies in US coinage during the single squeeze process were well documented before my discovery of the 2004P DDO nickel. If I wouldnt have known about the single-squeeze doubled dies in US coins, I would have probably not looked at my nickel in the first place.
I believe doubled dies for 2005 have already been found in some lincoln cents. Im not sure who has found them, but I think I remember reading somewere that someone had found some already.
Also, how did you acquire all of those wavy steps? Did you find them, or did you buy them? I would like to get my hands in a couple of them. I only have 4 in my collection.

Hi Gabe - Actually, your nickel was the first single squeeze doubled die that ALL the expert agreed on. Billy Crawforrd, Ken Potter and John Wexler have all determined that wavy steps are a doubled die; the only hold out is CONECA and James Wiles, who still does not believe that they are and from all indications never will.
The 1997 doubled ear does fall into the catagory of the single squeeze, however, there is still a bit of doubt that this was produced by the single squeeze method and may have been a multiple hubbed die.
So far 2005 has produced a few very minor doubled dies. The ones you refered to were discussed by John Wexler in COIN WORLD. The extra bars in Bay # 5 on the reverse of the Lincoln cent are what John is calling a doubled die; they very well maybe, however, that is still undiceded. There have also been two very minor wavy steps that have been found.
All the wavy steps in my collection, except for maybe 4 or 5 which I bought, were found. Hopefully, this doubled die will receive a bit more attention which it deserves; there are some very nice and very strong wavy steps out there that need to be studied to see exactly what is going on.
You all take care and keep on searching.
