I entered a post in the chat room, but it did not get too much response. I noticed that the mintmark in the 1913-S RPM on the home page is the same mint mark punch used in the 1909 S VDB, right down to the lump tucked under the upper serif.

Here is the 1909 S VDB mint mark

Gabe pointed out that there does seem to be a notch to the left, under the bottom serif of the S on the 1909 similar to the notch under the bottom serif of the S on the 1913. However there is no other indication of doubling on the 1909-S VDB mintmark. Any thoughts? Smile

The same mintmark punch style is observed on a number of different dates on a number of different denomintions. The mintmark used for San Francisco during the early 70s has a crease in the center of it for no apparent reason and shows on all coins minted with dies where that punch style was applied. It doesn't mean anything, just that the punch was fouled up...that's all.

The lump is much better defined on the 1913-S than on the 1909 S vdb. Also, Im still intrigued by the notch in the lower left of the 1909 S vdb mintmark. I will have to look at it again.
