Finally found one! 1980D-1OM-001

Okay, this one was very doubtful when I found it, but I decided to hold onto it and run an overlay with Garry's coin to make sure "it wasn't"...well, turns out that the overlay matches perfectly, and this is the lastest die state 1980D/S cent I've ever seen...



I now only have ONE over mintmark left to find in the Lincoln cent series - the most obvious and hardest one to find...1944D-1OM-001.[/img]

Nice find, but I dont know how you even saw that. I would have missed it all together...

Now you gotta find the 1944 D/S and you will have a very nice accomplishement. I still need to find a OMM variety by myself.

I found it by having known for many years now what they look like and where to look for the anomaly. If I hadn't known very well what to look for I certainly would have missed it as well.

Even with having set it aside, I was doubtful I had found one until I was able to use the photo I took of Garry's coin to do an overlay...that's when I was convinced I had found one.

Now...we know that the die lasted until it was VLDS, there should be hundreds of thousands of these out there. Where are they???

Nice going Chuck!!! I was fortunate to find a 1944-1OM-001 in of all places, a bag of "unsearched" wheat cents. The one you just found completed my collection of OM's, for it was the last one that I needed. However, are you aware that there is a 1981, D & S out there? Wexler has it listed in his files as 1981, WDDM-001 and I am not to sure what the listing number is in the Crawford files. At one time it was even listed in the CONECA files, but later debunked as die scratches. I have seen pictures of this seperated different mint marks and it does not appear to be die scratches but an actual "S" high up between the 9 and 8. I do not have that one.

Hi BJ...

I was sent a picture of the 1981 back when Brian Allen first took them (around 2002), and by the photos alone I would be uncertain about listing it - I'd have to get a coin and run an overlay.

I have been watching 1981 cents for this anomaly and have come up empty to date.

I'd about fall out of my chair if a 1944D #1 came out of "unsearched" material - I have found three examples of #2, but still have yet to find a #1.

Great find Chuck. I am happy you were persistent on that one. In this case...knowledge IS the key.
Of course you know I found my 44D/S OMM #1 in an unsearched bunch...but I still don't have the 80 D & S yet. I too am close to completing all the overmintmarks. I just need the 80 D & S and the 46 S over D. Once again...Congrats!

Someone sent me one 1981D/S, well its marked that way, but I can't see much of an S there. Just looks kind of rough there above the mint mark. It may be the real thing, I just can't say for sure. The D mintmark is very large so I don't know. I guess I'll have to see if the markers match to a real one or not.

Coop - as far as I know there is no such thing as a "real" 1981D/S...there's no information published about one anywhere that I've ver found.

I just figured he was on crack or something and never thought about till it came up in chat. Its still sitting in a pile of undecided and unlisted coins that has accumalated. Probably the used 2X2 is worth more than the coin in it. LOL

Hi guys....
I have seen many 1981 D coins with an anomaly that I thought years ago may have been a S mintmark. I have since concluded that they are nothing more that gouges etc. Here is a pic of one of the ones I kept. The arrow points to the area that has the anomaly.
